What do you mean by ISO 50001?

ISO 50001, also known commonly as Energy Management System, is an ISO standard developed by ISO, that stands for the International Organization for Standardization.

The standard explains about various requirements necessary for establishment, implementation, maintenance, improvement of energy management system. It has an aim to make organizations capable of following systematic approach in order to get bettered and improved performances related to energy, which comprises of efficiency of energy, security of energy, use ad well as consumption of energy.

Also the standard has set a target to enable organizations for continuous reduction in the utilization of energy, the costs of energy utilization and the emission of various kinds of greenhouse gases.

ISO bought this standard back in June of 2011. The standard is applicable for all kinds lf organization regardless of their size, sector, geographical location. The standard was revised and its second edition was published in August 2018.

Looking after ISO 9001, also commonly known as quality management system and ISO 14001, also commonly known as environment management system, the revised version of ISO 50001 has been published. So, ISO 50001:2018 has clauses modular to both of those standards.

ISO 50001 significant feature is the need for improvement of EnMS and the energy performance that comes as a result, as mentioned in the clause 4.2.1 c. However, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 have the need for improving management system’s effectiveness but not related to product or services, quality (ISO 9001) or to environmental performance (ISO 14001). Via implementation of both these standards, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it is expected that the organization can bring improvements in quality as well as the performance of the environment. However, the standard hasn’t currently specified it as the requirement.

ISO 50001 has therefore set really high standards as it demands organization to show they have made improvement in their energy related performances. There has been no specification of quantitative targets. The organization selects its own and then prepares action plans necessary for achieving the targets accordingly. By this kind of structured approach, the organization has great chances of gaining financial benefits.

Why is ISO 50001 used?

ISO 50001 standard has been utilized with the aim to bring improvement in the various performances that are environment related. It also aims at bringing improvement in energy efficiency as well. Approaching systematically in this manner enables organizations for establishment of systems and processes.

When you are able to consistently manage energy, it also enables organizations to know about untapped energy efficiency potential. The organizations will receive advantages from cost savings and as a result of which they can make contribution from their side for protection of the environment and climate. For instance: reducing emissions of harmful gases like Carbon Dioxide permanently. Employees as well as management level should be notified about immediate as well as log term gains of the energy management. It enables organizations for the discovery of the potential savings as well as competitive benefits. Also the name and fame of the organizations can be increased.
